Ambitious photographers worldwide are invited to enter their work for the ZEISS Photography Award 2019, which revolves around the theme Seeing Beyond – The Unexpected. The winner will be selected by an international jury of experts. Submissions close on 8 February 2019.

The ZEISS Photography Award 2019 is calling on photographers from all around the world to present their work to an international jury of experts. The theme of this year’s competition is Seeing Beyond – The Unexpected. The deadline for submissions is 8 February 2019.

The brief of the unexpected may be interpreted in the broadest sense. The submitted series must, however, be driven by a strong and clear narrative that looks beyond the everyday, with a focus on the surprising and unforeseen. This may be found in a landscape or physical space as much as in a human expression, emotion or interaction; equally, it may be conveyed in a political or social context, or in the form of a more conceptual approach. In the same vein, this element of the unexpected can be of either global or personal significance; the images may show something familiar in a new light, or draw attention to something entirely unknown. Submissions of all genres are welcome.

The ZEISS Photography Award is jointly organised by ZEISS and the World Photography Organisation. Last year, some 12,000 photographers from 140 countries submitted close to 90,000 images. On 26 March 2019, the jury will announce a shortlist of 15 series – the winner will subsequently be named on 9 April 2019.
