The Side Gallery in Newcastle Upon Tyne presents long-term photographic studies by artists such as Chris Killip, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Alys Tomlinson. Continues until October 3, 2021.
The exhibition ‘Youth Rising in the UK 1981–2001’ brings together works by nine photographers who have captured young people in the United Kingdom over a total period of forty years.
The starting point of the presentation are rarely seen images from the AmberSide Collection, recorded in the 1980s by the collective’s founding members, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Chris Killip. In her series ‘Writing in the Sand’ the Finnish-born artist celebrates beach life in the North East of England. Chris Killip’s ‘Skinningrove’ (1982 – 1984) documents the lives of young fishermen and their community in a North Yorkshire coastal village; this early body of work is already imbued with the rough, raw beauty that went on to characterise the British photographer’s oeuvre.
The showcase also features current works by Alys Tomlinson, Maryam Wahid, Sadie Catt, Tom Sussex, Christopher Nunn, Paul Knox, and Vanessa Winship.
