July 31, 2018

The winners of this year’s Women Photograph competition have been chosen
Once again this year, the Women Photograph initiative, in close collaboration with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, launched a competition looking for the best photo series by female and non-binary photographers.

The top award goes Nadia Shira Cohen, whose series Yo No Di a Luz, using very clear imagery to report on abortion in El Salvador, received a grant worth $10,000. Further grants of $5,000 went to Tasneem Alsultan, Anna Boyiazis, Jess T. Dugan, Etinosa Yvonne Osayimwen, and Ana Maria Arevalo Gosen, who used a Leica Q to document female inmates in prisons in Venezuela.

The Women Photograph initiative was established in 2017, in support of women photo journalists. It currently includes 750 independent photographers from 99 countries. The yearly competition aims to help draw attention to and redress the gender imbalance in the world of photo journalism .
