The WestLicht Gallery in Vienna currently presents more than 100 works by Lisette Model, Diane Arbus and Nan Goldin – three great American photographers whose images radically expanded our understanding of social diversity. Each of the three women captured different eras in the United States, which continues to consolidate cultures from all around the world.
Over the course of three generations – starting with Vienna-born Lisette Model (1901–83) – they each reinvented the dialogue between subject and photographer, whilst combining their subjective perceptions with a documentary approach. Their portrayals of subcultures questioned established social norms and aesthetic conventions alike. As a result, their images were not only fascinating studies of different social environments, but also celebrations of the multi-faceted nature of our existence.
