The Albertina in Vienna presents key movements in US-American photography. Open from August 24 to November 28, 2021.

The inversion of the American Dream is at the heart of a new exhibition presented at the Albertina in Vienna. Comprising around 150 works, the showcase explores American society from both critical and humorous perspectives: elaborately staged portraits are juxtaposed with striking impressions of consumerist culture, along with spontaneous street scenes captured in major cities across the US.

In addition to prints from the museum’s own holdings, the selection also includes central works from the collection of the former US Ambassador to Austria, Trevor Traina.

‘American Photography’ features images by Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Lewis Baltz, Tina Barney, William Christenberry, John Coplans, Gregory Crewdson, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, William Eggleston, Mitch Epstein, Walker Evans, Larry Fink, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Paul Graham, William Klein, David LaChapelle, Saul Leiter, O. Winston Link, Ryan McGinley, Ray K. Metzker, Joel Meyerowitz, Lisette Model, Cindy Sherman, Stephen Shore, Alec Soth, Joel Sternfeld, Larry Sultan, Weegee, and Garry Winogrand.
