Woodman's self-dramatisations attest to her extensive understanding of the formal and iconographic art-historical traditions. With selected props and meticulous compositions, she teases out associations with classic mythological subjects, the visual language of surrealism, and the works of earlier artists such as Claude Cahun.
The Hubert Winter Gallery has previously hosted a presentation of Woodman's remarkable work at Art Basel 2012, as part of a joint exhibition with Birgit Jürgenssen. The current show comprises around 40 photographs including vintage prints, offering a comprehensive overview of the artist's creative legacy.
