Alec Soth – Photography is A Language

February 26, 2020

Austrian debut: Kunst Haus Vienna presents an exhibition of works by Magnum and Leica photographer Alec Soth. Open from February 27 to August 2020.
Alec Soth (born 1969 in Minneapolis, USA) is renowned for his evocative, large-format images of everyday life in the American Midwest. In 2004 he achieved his first major breakthrough with the series Sleeping by the Mississippi, a landmark project echoing the social documentary approach of Robert Frank. Soth’s long-term studies of life in the USA are characterised by a poetic melancholy, as he skilfully conveys love and loneliness whilst reflecting on sociopolitical themes.

The solo exhibition at Vienna’s Kunst Haus museum marks the first time Soth’s work has been presented in Austria. In addition to the photographer’s most widely known series – Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagara (2006), Broken Manual (2010) and Songbook (2015) – the showcase also includes his latest portrait project, I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating (2019).
