From July 14 to August 24, 2016, the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar is presenting the Personal Best for Leica exhibition by Elliott Erwitt. The personal retrospective testifies to the photographer’s long-term relationship with his Leica.
The photographer, who was born in Paris in 1928 and emigrated to the USA with his family in 1939, is known for his humorous images. He decided to dedicate his life to photography at the end of the forties. With mentors such as Robert Capa, Edward Streichen and Roy Stryker, Erwitt quickly developed his own unique visual style: intimate, ironic, surprising, at times impertinent and cheeky, yet always technically flawless. Erwitt became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1954, and has acted as the agency’s president for three years.
