November 10, 2015
Richard Avedon – Charlie Chaplin Leaving America, New York, September 13, 1952
(estimate 60,000–80,000 Euros)
The preview exhibition for the WestLicht photography auction is designed to enable potential buyers to view the listed works prior to bidding. At the same time, it is an opportunity for photography enthusiasts to see some of the most famous examples of the medium's history.
Among the works on display are icons such as Robert Capa's 'The Falling Soldier'. Taken during the Spanish Civil War, it is one of the best-known and most-debated photographs in the world. Further acclaimed Magnum photographers will also be represented at the auction – including Henri Cartier-Bresson with two portraits of Henri Matisse, and David Seymour with the last photograph he took before his death.
At the core of the 13th WestLicht Photo Auction are more than 100 items owned by the Swiss collector Kaspar M. Fleischmann, among them numerous vintage prints by Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams and Richard Avedon.
A total of 280 lots will be offered for auction on 20 November.
The preview exhibition is open daily from 14.00 to 18.00. Alternatively, viewings can be arranged by prior appointment, tel. +43 (0)1 522 66 36 66). Admission is free.
