The outdoor exhibition ‘We Had a Normal Life. Ukraine 2006–2022’ opens in Hamburg on May 31, 2022. More than twenty members of the photography agencies Focus (Hamburg) and MAPS (Brussels) present their images of Ukraine, captured both during peacetime and in the recent months. The international showcase was organised in collaboration with the Hamburg Agency for Civic Education, the St. Nikolai Memorial, and ZEIT Publishing.

By juxtaposing current press photographs with archival material from the Focus and MAPS agencies, the exhibition offers insights into everyday life in Ukraine and, consequently, the devastating impact of the war.

Throughout the exhibition period, the St. Nikolai Memorial will also host a series of accompanying events, which shed light on the history of Ukraine as well as the realities of photographing in a war zone.

The represented photographers are: Sebastian Backhaus, Daniel Berehulak, Massimo Berruti, Roman Bezjak, Kitra Cahana, Emre Caylak, Roland Geisheimer, Kirill Golovchenko, Andrej Krementschouk, Sergey Maximishin, Justyna Mielnikiewicz, Mark Mühlhaus, Daniel Müller, Dominic Nahr, Alessandro Penso, Julius Schrank, Maxim Sergienko, Éric Vazzoler, Thomas Victor, John Vink, and Marlena Waldthausen.

‘We Had a Normal Life. Ukraine 2006–2022’ is conceptualised as a travelling exhibition, with Hamburg as its first station. The showcase is on display at the St. Nikolai Memorial until July 3, 2022.
