From March 17 to May 29, 2016, the VHS Stuttgart photo gallery is presenting 'Breakin' the City', an exhibition by Nicolaus Schmidt.

Nicolaus Schmidt approaches New York from an unusual perspective. He combines classic street photography with dance moves by break dancers from the Bronx and Brooklyn, that he integrates into the pictures. The city as a stage. In the middle of the hectic scene, living sculptures seem to emerge from another dimension in time.

Street photography makes up the first part of the exhibition. In the second part, the photographer uses impressive portraits to introduce the dancers. The pictures reveal the dancers' spontaneity and freedom to do what they want within the urban setting. It is only Schmidt's personal and trusting contact to the dancers that makes it possible to get these pictures.

Nicolaus Schmidt lives in Berlin. The 'Breakin‘ the City' project came about during a number of weeks spent in New York between 2007 and 2010. A photo book accompanies the exhibition.
