Blazing Light and Luminous Green

August 11, 2022

With its ‘Summer’ exhibition, Johanna Breede Photokunst in Berlin presents a diverse spectrum of visual positions on the happiest time of the year. On show until September 16, 2022.
The summer season is in full swing, people are flocking to green spaces and beaches, the trees are clad in abundant greens. And even if the brilliant colours are not overtly visible, their vibrancy still emanates from the displayed black and white works: with an unerring sense for arrangements and compositions, Johanna Breede has curated an exquisite exhibition that is entirely luminescent – even without a chromatic depiction in sight.

Simply titled ‘Summer’, the showcase – which can be viewed at Johanna Breede Photokunst until September 16, 2022 – includes works by Thomas Hoepker, Sibylle Bergemann, Max Scheler, Nomi Baumgartl, Stefan Moses, Beat Presser, Lillian Birnbaum, and Donata Wenders, to name but a few. The selected approaches are highly diverse, ranging from Lillian Birnbaum’s seemingly incidental shot of Hannah Schygulla to a delicately melancholic diptych by Isa Marcelli, all the way to Nomi Baumgartl’s summertime portrait of Tatjana Patitz, captured at the height of the supermodel’s career in the 1990s.

The resulting showcase is a vibrant and colourful homage to summer – albeit in black and white.
