For the past several decades, Ruth and Peter Herzog have compiled a visual anthology of life during the Industrial Age. Kunstmuseum Basel currently presents ‘The Incredible World of Photography’ – comprising 400 excerpts from the couple’s remarkable collection. As well as addressing the collection’s central themes, the exhibition also explores the process of compiling a photography collection, the relationship between archive and museum, as well as between photography and other forms of art. In addition, the showcase illustrates the diversity of photographic printing methods, with the displayed works ranging from daguerrotypes, ambrotypes and ferrotypes to salted paper prints, albumen silver prints, autochromes and gelatin silver prints.
Along with well-known pioneers such as Adolphe Disdéri, Gustave Le Gray, Eugène Atget, Fred Boissonnas, Charles Nègre and Felice Beato, as well as renowned photographers such as Paul Martial and Hans Hinz, the selection also includes numerous works by unknown amateur artists.
