Bonhams Fine Art Auctioneers are selling masterpieces by one of photography history’s most extraordinary pioneers: the online auction takes place on February 2, 2021.

American photographer and film-maker Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) briefly attended the Los Angeles City College to study photojournalism, before moving to New York in 1943 – where she worked as a nightclub photographer and shot baby pictures to save up for her first professional camera. She went on to become a freelance photographer for major magazines such as LIFE, Look and Ladies’ Home Journal. In the early 1950s Orkin travelled across Europe, where she took many of her most famous images. She also worked as a lecturer for photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York (1976 to 1978) and the International Center of Photography (1979).

To mark the centenary of the artist’s birth, Bonhams New York has been showcasing a selection of her work under the title ‘The Photographs of Ruth Orkin: A Centennial Celebration’, on display since January 22, 2021. These masterpieces can now be acquired at the upcoming online auction on February 2, 2021, with prices starting from $2,000.
