Robert Knoth (b. 1963) and Antoinette de Jong (1964) undertook several trips to Fukushima, Japan, shortly after the tsunami-induced nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011. The Dutch artist duo wanted to experience first-hand how this catastrophe had impacted the region, and talk to the people living there. The photographs, videos and audio recordings they captured in the course of these repeated visits are poignant reminders of the complex relationship between humans and nature.

The resulting photo series – titled ’Tree and Soil’ – is now on display at Fotomuseum Den Haag, complemented by an audiovisual installation. A book of the same title is also available.

In ‘Tree and Soil’, Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong create a dialogue between the landscapes of Japan and objects from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center’s Siebold Collection. The multi-media presentation was inspired by the Japanese term for ‘landscape': ‘fukei’ – which, when written down, contains the characters for both ‘wind’ and ‘shadow’, signifying the constant changes that occur in a natural landscape.
