One Amongst Many

The exhibition Plethora by Julio Bittencourt opens at the Galeria da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro on 5 May, continuing until 14 June 2019.

Plethora explores the relationship between individuals and the complex structures of metropolitan environments. Shot in seven countries over the course of five years, the series focuses on topics such as housing, means of transportation, urban spaces, and leisure activities. The main emphasis is on the experience of proximity and uniformity within the masses, and the feeling of loneliness and anonymity this can create. The project’s title references the core essence of this concept: in medicine, the term plethora is used to describe ‘an excess of bodily fluids’ – in the context of this series, it refers to the reality of life in densely populated mega-cities.
