Epicentre of German Photography

Kunsthalle Dusseldorf celebrates some of the leading protagonists of Germany’s photography scene: ‘Subject and Object’ continues until August 16, 2020.
The megacities of Germany’s Ruhr district have long been home to a particularly large number of art academies. Kunsthalle Dusseldorf currently explores the vibrant photography scene that has been flourishing in this part of the country since the 1960s.

The represented photographers span three generations – from Otto Steinert (alumnus of the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen) to Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth (former students of the legendary Bernd & Hilla Becher), all the way to leading figures of the region’s contemporary photography scene.

Titled ‘Subject and Object. Photo Rhein Ruhr’, the exhibition features over 600 works by around 100 photographers – among them Bernd & Hilla Becher, Beate Gütschow, Candida Höfer, Timm Rautert, Viktoria Binschtok, Tobias Zielony, Peter Piller, Heinrich Riebesehl, Thomas Ruff and Walter Vogel.
