The Art of Portraiture

SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne presents the winner of the August Sander Prize 2020: the exhibition ‘Head Studies’ with works by Rebecca Unz is open until August 8, 2021.

In 2020, young Austrian artist Rebecca Unz (b. 2000) was awarded the August-Sander-Prize for her portrait series ‘Sensibelchen / Sensitive Ones’ (2018–2019), which focuses on the faces of young men and women from the Rap and Hip Hop scene.

By lighting each portrait in a specific manner, Unz created a cohesive sequence which, frame by frame, gradually changes from warm to cold colour tones. This intensifies the range of variations between each captured moment.

The series is displayed alongside other works from the young artist’s oeuvre, including drawings and excerpts from her graduation project, ‘Who is Eloquent’.
