The exhibition will include many iconic portraits and celebrity shots that have made it into the annals of photographic history – from dazzling beauty shots and classic fashion spreads, to excerpts from several of the artist’s profound conceptual series. Under the title ‘Leaps in Time’, works spanning from the 1990s to the 2000s are presented in dialogue with brand-new, previously unpublished pictures created in 2023.
Throughout his career, the artist has portrayed some of the most famous personalities of our time: Queen Elizabeth II, Vivienne Westwood, Ewan McGregor, Björk, Heidi Klum and David Bowie have all posed in front of Rankin’s camera. The fact that he is far more than a fashion and lifestyle photographer is vividly demonstrated by his passion for magazines – a prime example being the extraordinary Rankin Issue of S Magazine (No. 3). In the early 1990s, Rankin and Jefferson Hack founded the genre-blending zeitgeist magazine Dazed & Confused – at the time, the most provocative publication of its kind.
His editorials for leading international magazines have made Rankin one of the most sought-after and influential photographers of our era. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he is equally at home in the world of film-making: in addition to TV feature films, he has directed countless music videos – once again working with a list of artists that reads like a who’s who of the music industry.
Rankin has without doubt challenged and inspired generations, be it as a photographer, film-maker, publisher or designer. And he still continues to seek out ever-new outlets for his creativity – often with a Leica camera.
