A new documentary film explores the iconic British magazine and its extraordinary photographers. Released in UK cinemas on September 24, 2021.
The feature-length documentary ‘Picture Stories’ centres around the revolutionary magazine that pioneered a new approach to portraying British life during and after World War II. Its contributors – many of whom were Leica photographers – captured the everyday lives of ordinary people in direct and unembellished images. Among them were Kurt Hutton and Bert Hardy, who mostly worked with a Leica III – imbuing their picture stories with an intimate sense of proximity.
In this new documentary feature, photographers, authors and editors retrace the history of the Picture Post, and reflect on the magazine’s lasting influence on modern British photography.
Prior to its cinema release on September 24, the documentary will be screened at the Royal Photographic Society in Bristol (September 15) and the Photography Show in Birmingham (September 18). As of September 30, ‘Picture Stories’ is also available to download from major online platforms.
