Modern Mythology

From 18 January to 2 March 2019, the Galerie Folia in Paris presents the exhibition ‘A Myth of Two Souls’ – a showcase of works by Vasantha Yogananthan, winner of the Prix de la Photo Camera Clara 2018. In this project, the Paris-based photographer explores the ancient Indian tale ‘The Ramayana’.

‘The Ramayana’ is India’s oldest and most prevalent fairytale, which continues to be deeply embedded in Indian culture. It recounts the life and adventures of Rama, Prince of the Kosala Kingdom. When Rama’s wife is abducted by the demon Ravana Sita and taken to the island of Lanka, Rama sets out to rescue her, aided by Commander Hanuman and his army of monkeys. Sita is liberated, and Rama takes the throne as a courageous warrior.

To create ‘A Myth of Two Souls’, Yogananthan retraced the prince’s journey across India – travelling more than 5,000 kilometres from the Himalayan foothills to the country’s south. Along the way, he captured visual re-imaginings of the traditional narrative – resulting in a contemporary, but no less spellbinding, retelling of the ancient tale. Originally shot in black-and-white with a large-format camera, his images were subsequently hand-coloured by an Indian artist.
