Gyuto

January 8, 2019

From 8 January to 2 February 2019, a photo exhibition at the Parisian Thierry Bigaignon Gallery focuses on the life of Tibet’s Gyuto monks.
From 8 January to 2 February 2019, visitors to the Thierry Bigaignon Gallery in Paris have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Tibetan Gyuto monks. The showcase, simply titled ‘Gyuto’, is the culmination of nine years of dedicated research by Australian Leica-photographer Tobi Wilkinson. The Gyuto Order was founded in 1475; in the almost 600 years since then, its members have continually maintained its practices, rites and traditions. Wilkinson manages to capture their everyday lives with her Leica M in images imbued with spirituality, poetry and grace.

‘Gyuto’ is part of the gallery’s new programme ‘Matters that matter’, which gives photographers from all around the world a chance to debut their documentary projects in Paris. The showcase is accompanied by Wilkinson’s book of the same title, featuring an introduction by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
