Eyes directed straight at the camera with a challenging gaze, lascivious poses with feminine attributes: even at first glance, the portraits of young Arab men immediately convey an unfamiliar perspective. And that is precisely the photographer’s aim. Having spent several years working on independent projects in Arab countries, she consciously approaches her theme from a female point of view – achieving new and surprising results.
From 2012 to 2016, Coten (born 1958) photographed in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan to create her series Mectoub, for which she received this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Her work is now on display at the Spree Gallery in Paris until 20 January 2017.
