A current exhibition at the Met in NYC illustrates how women photographers around the world have shaped the medium from the 1920s to the 1950s. Comprising 185 images, photo books and magazines, ‘The New Women Behind the Camera’ features works by 120 artists from 20 countries. The showcase (which is the first to explore the subject with an international approach) highlights women’s innovative work in different genres – ranging from avant-garde experiments and commercial studio portraiture, all the way to social documentaries, photojournalism, ethnography, as well sports, dance and fashion photography.
The represented artists include renowned Leica photographer Ilse Bing, as well as Lola Álvarez Bravo, Claude Cahun, Florestine Perrault Collins, Elizaveta Ignatovich, Dorothea Lange, Lee Miller, Niu Weiyu, Tsuneko Sasamoto, Gerda Taro, Homai Vyarawalla, and many more.
