Playspace at Aperture

January 7, 2015

“The Photographer’s Playspace” is an ongoing exhibit at the Aperture Foundation NY Gallery. Open for viewing until January 29, 2015.
The show’s fresh perspectives offer a glimpse into the future of creative photographic processes and reveals each artist’s distinctive process and aesthetic, demonstrating how a simple prompt can inspire renewed engagement with the medium.

It features twenty photographers who have created new works in response to assignments from the Aperture book “The Photographer’s Playbook: 307 Assignments and Ideas”, a recently published compilation designed to inspire fresh perspectives in a photographer’s creative process.

Using assignments selected by Christopher McCall, director of Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco, the photographers produced works that both reflect a continuation of established practices and represent new directions in making pictures.

Participating photographers and their assignments, including many more:

Jim Goldberg responded to an assignment by Eric William Carroll
Todd Hido responded to an assignment by Oscar Palacio

Viviane Sassen responded to an assignment by Schuyler Duffy
Mike Slack responded to an assignment by Susan Meiselas
Alec Soth responded to an assignment by Paul Reas

The commissioned photographs, many of which have been produced in unique editions, will be available through Aperture Foundation. Sales proceeds support the Foundation’s public and book-publishing programs.
