Julie Blackmon (born 1966 in Springfield, Missouri) creates photographs that are a skilful blend of pop phenomena, consumer culture, social satire, and references to iconic American works of art. Her images are interspersed with disposable artefacts of daily life – fast-food wrappers, potato chip bags, discarded toys and magazine – and often centre around children who appear to have been left unsupervised.
There is a surreal quality to Blackmon’s orchestrations, which blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Set against the backdrop of the photographer’s own hometown – which she describes as “the generic American town” in the heart of the United States – the seemingly innocuous domestic scenes are imbued with an underlying sense of both satire and unease.
