Torso Reloaded

‘Torso Reloaded’ with photographs by Nadine Dinter opens at the HAZEGALLERY in Berlin on October 1, 2022. The solo exhibition continues until October 29, 2022.

Nadine Dinter first developed the concept for her showcase back in 2012, during a collaboration with New York photographer Christopher Makos – a long-time companion of Andy Warhol. At that time, Dinter was the curator for Makos’ exhibition ‘Andy Dandy and Other Works’ at Berlin’s Hiltawsky Gallery. One of the protagonists featured in Makos’ series was Benjamin Godfre: former erotic art model, present-day tattoo artist, and – as it turned out – an avid Andy Warhol fan. Based on this shared passion, Dinter and Godfre spontaneously decided to recreate Warhol’s legendary ‘Torso’ series of 1977.

Exactly ten years later, Dinter once again revisited the project. While still intrinsically inspired by Warhol’s work, the photographer now placed a primary focus on different body types and their orchestrations within the context of today’s generation of men.

In addition to the initial chapter of the project – featuring the torso of Benjamin Godfre – the series now comprises images of six representative men, ranging from professional model Benjamin Kühnemund all the way to a wrestler, a fitness instructor, a computer scientist, as well as fellow photographers Alexander Schuktuew and Traegi. While Warhol mainly photographed the front and back of male models in a tight close-up shot, Nadine Dinter’s wider framing gives them more space, adding impact to individual characteristics such as tattoos, scars and musculature.

As a result, the bodies seem close enough to touch without being overtly sexualised. The contemplative body shots were taken in an intimate hotel setting, using only natural light. Each picture tells its own story – transforming the bare image into a unique photographic profile.
