Outstanding Reportage Photography

July 3, 2015

The winners of this year's n-ost-Reportage Award have been chosen.
Each category of the n-ost Reportage Award – which recognizes outstanding reportages on Eastern Europe that appeared in the German-speaking media during 2014 – comes with prize money amounting to 2000 euros. The 2015 winners are: Moritz Gathmann and Christian Neef (Granaten und Rosen (Grenades and Roses), Der Spiegel, 20.12.2014) in the text category;
Ernst von Waldenfels (Axt und Feder (Axe and Feather), DLF, 02.12.2014) in the radio category; and Florian Bachmeier (Der weiße Tod (The White Death), Profil and others, 24.03.2014) in the photography category. In their reportages, the journalists deal with stories going on behind the scenes of different events, managing, as a result, to convey the full scope of these events.

Florian Bachmeier is the winner in the photography category
Florian Bachmeier reported on the return of the White Death – tuberculosis – to Moldova. In addition to their photographic quality, the images manage to convey the photographer's sympathy for the patients. “Empathy allows us to feel what another feels. There's no doubt that Florian Bachmeier has achieved that,” says Michael Biedowicz, photo editor of Zeit Magazin. Bachmeier, who was born in 1974, has been working as a free-lance photographer since 2004. At the moment, he is working, among other things, on a long-term project about the countries surrounding the Black Sea.
