Drawn to the Unfathomable

August 21, 2018

The Munich City Museum just received a generous donation of works from the retrospective ‘Roger Ballen – Photographs 1969-2009’, originally curated by the museum’s photography department in 2010.
On 21 August 2018 the Munich City Museum has officially been presented with a donation of significant works by South-Africa-based photographer Roger Ballen. The endowment is comprised of 175 original prints created in the years from 1960 to 2014, during various different periods of the Leica photographer’s career. The Photography Collection of the Munich City Museum will consequently hold the largest collection of Ballen’s work worldwide.

Roger Ballen (born 1950 in New York City) ranks among the most widely recognised photographers of our time. His images reflect the artist’s fascination for the outlandish and grotesque, though his work is always rooted in a documentary approach. The 2010 retrospective included excerpts from series such as Boyhood, Dorps, Platteland, Shadow Chamber, Outland and Asylum.

The photographer will attend the official presentation at the Munich City Museum. The event includes speeches by Dr. Hans-Georg Küppers (Director of Munich’s Municipal Department of Arts and Culture), Dr. Ulrich Pohlmann (Director of the Munich City Museum’s Photography Collection), and the artist himself.
