Luzia Simons’ solo exhibition ‘Stockage’ continues at the Andreas Binder Gallery in Munich until January 30, 2021.
The style of Luzia Simons’ large-format, floral still lifes veers between painting and photography. However, the artist – who moved from Brazil to Europe at the age of 23 – does not simply pay tribute to the vanitas paintings of the Baroque period: beneath their aesthetic surface, her works examine central questions of identity as a socio-cultural construct, and convey a global understanding of cultural differences and distinctions.
To achieve this visual interplay of overt depictions and subtle culture codes, Simons uses a method known as scannography, whereby she arranges botanical objects to be directly scanned.
In contrast to traditional photography, the resulting image is devoid of a central perspective. Simons skilfully applies this process of direct reproduction to create profoundly expressive works of art.
