May 8, 2016

From May 13 to July 31, 2016, the Munich Stadtmuseum's is presenting the purchases and acquisitions for its photography collection over the past ten years.

From individual picture and albums to omnibus volumes, new works are continuously finding their way into the photography collection of the Munich Stadtmuseum. Sometimes they are acquired through auctions or from art dealers, sometimes they are gifted by photographers or their families, or sometimes they are just purchased. This collection is being presented by the Munich Stadtmuseum from May 13 to July 31, 2016, in an exhibition titled 'Geschenkt. Gekauft. Gefunden' (Gifted, purchased, found).

From the early days of photography in the 19th century to contemporary approaches, this cross-section of the new acquisitions over recent years covers the whole diversity of photographic history.

The exhibition lays emphasis on photographic portraits, both staged and representative of yesteryear as well as today, follows the pioneers of photography on their expeditions to distant lands, without losing sight of Munich, documents contemporary history and events, and surveys the photographic archives system. Around 200 photographs will be on display, including pictures by dr Ernst Becker, Roger Fenton, Herlinde Koelbl, Seiichi Furuya, Frank Eugene, André Gelpke, Dieter Appelt, Eva Bertram, Olaf Unverzart, Guido Mangold and Silke Grossmann.
