Modern photography is inextricably linked with urban culture: it was within city environments that the photographers of the 1920s found inspiration for their experimental compositions, and pursued the New Vision that would become the hallmark of avant-garde photography. At the same time, many artists are fascinated by the social fabric of urban life, exploring the bustle and interactions on city streets with their cameras. These everyday scenes present cities as collective living spaces, and describe a wide variety of people, their circumstances and surroundings.
This exhibition comprises images taken from the 1920s to the 1940s, featuring works by Aenne Biermann, Florence Henri, Germaine Krull, Man Ray, Albert Renger-Patzsch and Friedrich Seidenstücker. All photographs on display have been selected from the holdings of the Ann and Jürgen Wilde Foundation.
