The exhibition ‘Aurès, 1935’ with works by Thérès Rivière and Germaine Tillion is on display at the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier, southern France, from 7 February to 15 April 2018.
From 7 February to 15 April 2018, the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier presents the exhibition Aurès, 1935, featuring photographs by Thérès Rivière and Germaine Tillion. From 1935 onwards, the two researchers spent several years on an ethnographic mission in the Algerian mountains, documenting the tradition-steeped culture, customs and everyday lives of the Chaoui people – a Berber population indigenous to the Aurès region. The experience subsequently inspired Germain Tillion’s political and social commitment in Algeria during the 1950s.
