The first retrospective of Martin Parr’s work in Belgium is currently open at the Hangar Art Center. Titled ’Parrathon’, the showcase retraces the British photographer’s career – which spans four decades to date – on the basis of 15 emblematic series. More than 400 images, brimming with irony and colour, are displayed across three floors of the Hangar Art Center.
Martin Parr (b. 1952) is renowned for his shrewdly observed images of modern life: with a mischievous gaze and quintessentially British humour, he photographs our Western society – a world characterised by mass consumption, an unpredictable economy, and a dysfunctional political backdrop. In addition to excerpts from famous bodies of work such as ‘The Last Resort’, ‘Think of England’, ‘Luxury’ and ‘Common Sense’, the exhibition also features works from the artist’s earlier series, such as ‘Bad Weather’ and ‘Non Conformists’.
