ZEPHYR - the Space for Photography in Mannheim is showing a comprehensive retrospective of the Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus, from September 6, 2019 to January 26, 2020.
The exhibition shows street and subtle everyday scenes of people in their normal lives, away from all excitement. Sutkus photographed the young and the old, children and workers, artists as well as farmers, town and country, modernity, tradition, traffic, boredom or simply the rain. The pictures of Antanas Sutkus enchant: all and everything have their place in his cosmos Lithuania, which in the days of the Soviet occupation was almost as difficult to reach as the moon.
The fact that the Lithuanian master photographer was only discovered in recent years, honored with awards such as the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize of the German Society for Photography, and is now published by Steidl Verlag, is mainly due to the fact that Lithuania lay deep behind the Iron Curtain until 1990.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Forum Internationale Fotografie, Museum Zeughaus.
