A record was set at the agency's AGM: six photographers were taken on as new members. Matt Black, Carolyn Drake, Lorenzo Meloni, Richard Mosse, Max Pinckers and Newsha Tavakolian have been given the opportunity to demonstrate their talent to the agency. They still have a long way to go before they are accepted as full members: in two year's time they will need 66% of the vote to acquire Associate Member status. They will not be able to apply for full membership until 2019. Michael Christopher Brown has just overcome the first hurdle and can become a full member in two year's time.
Normally, the agency only takes on one or two new members at a time. Speaking with Time Lightbox, Martin Parr, the agency's president, explained that the decision is an indicator of great trust in the future, while also reflecting a desire to find new talent who will continue the work of Magnum into the future.
