Share:

London’s National Portrait Gallery presents a major new retrospective by Cindy Sherman, displayed from 27 June to 15 September 2019. The selection includes the artist’s seminal series ‘Untitled Film Stills, 1977-80’ which has never been shown in the UK.

Cindy Sherman’s groundbreaking series ‘Untitled Film Stills, 1977-80’ makes its UK-debut as part of a major retrospective at London’s National Portrait Gallery. The showcase, which comprises a total of 180 images, traces the American artist’s career from the mid-seventies to the present day. The featured works are taken from various private and public collections, as well as more recent photographs which have not been exhibited before.

Cindy Sherman (born 1954) ranks among the world’s leading figures in contemporary art. She embarked on her project ‘Untitled Film Stills, 1977-80’ shortly after moving to New York in 1977. Witty and provocative, the series of seventy black-and-white images was the artist’s first breakthrough success. Then as now, her work is distinguished by a very distinctive approach: Sherman always assumes the role of both photographer and model – using costumes, wigs and makeup to transform herself into a myriad of different characters.
