As part of Photo London 2017, Leica Camera will debut the most recent project by Danish Magnum photographer Jacob Aue Sobol. Titled Road of Bones, the previously unpublished series consists of powerful black and white photographs created in the Russian Far East with a Leica M.
The project revolves around the Kolyma Highway (R504) and its dark and tragic origins. Thousands of Gulag prisoners lost their lives along this route, perishing from hunger and exhaustion as they constructed the road during the Soviet era. To this day, their skeletons remain buried beneath the highway. Sobol documents the bleak landscape and the people who live there – culminating in a story about a community in one of the world’s coldest regions. The photographs on display were taken in extreme conditions, at temperatures of up to minus 60 degrees Celsius.
