Four Series by Alec Soth

December 26, 2015

The Media Space at the Science Museum in London presents the first major UK exhibition by US photographer Alec Soth. On view until March 28, 2016.
'Gathered Leaves: Photographs by Alec Soth' offers visitors the opportunity to see the evolution of Soth’s four signature series as they move from the camera to the page of the book, to the wall of the gallery.

Through his series 'Sleeping by the Mississippi' (2004), 'Niagara' (2006), 'Broken Manual' (2010) and the highly-acclaimed recent 'Songbook' (2014), Soth has established himself as a vibrant, distinctive voice in contemporary international art. His work is characterised by a lyrical approach to documentary photography and a restless experimentation across the many forms that photography can take: from exhibitions and books, to zines and digital media.

Soth (*1969), who lives and works in Minnesota, is a fine artist, a Magnum photojournalist, a blogger, a self-publisher, an Instagrammer and an educator. His work shares a fascination for the open road with the great chroniclers of American life: Robert Frank, Stephen Shore, Jack Kerouac. Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013). In 2008, Soth founded his own publishing company, Little Brown Mushroom.
