Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2017

January 24, 2017

Get ready for the 37th edition of the prestigious international photo contest.
The Leica Oskar Barnack Award, named in honour of the inventor of the 35mm camera, has been given out annually since 1979. Previous winners include leading photography artists such as Sebastião Salgado, Eugene Richards, David C. Turnley and Jane Evelyn Atwood. Submissions for this year’s competition are open from 1 March to 10 April 2017, and are accepted exclusively online.

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award is restricted to professional photographers. A minimum of 10 and maximum of 12 images must be submitted either in the form of a series created in 2016/2017, or a long-term project containing at least one photograph from 2016/2017. No more than one entry per participant will be accepted.

The Newcomer Award is aimed at (prospective) professional photographers aged 25 or under at the time of submission. As in the main category, only series from 2016/2017 or long-term projects containing at least one image taken in 2016/2017 qualify for submission.

The Leica Oskar Barnack Award is one of the most highly-endowed competitions in the field of photography. The winner of the main category receives 25,000 euros as well as a Leica M system (camera and lens) worth approximately 10,000 euros. In the Newcomer category, the winner is also awarded a Leica M with lens along with a 10,000-euro cash prize. In addition, ten finalists stand to receive 2,500 euros each.

The awards ceremony for the 37th Leica Oskar Barnack Award is scheduled to take place in Berlin in autumn 2017.
