Beginning with the historical oeuvre of fashion and portrait photographer Dora Kallmus (also known as Madame d’Ora), the exhibition is dedicated to female Austrian artists whose work moves between fine-art and fashion photography. The showcase addresses the construction of beauty ideals, gender roles and stereotypes within fashion photography – thereby also raising questions regarding the social impact of contemporary fashion and advertising imagery.
The selected photographs explore themes such as eroticism, body image, the ambivalence of beauty, the objectification of women, transience and the marks of time. Many of the showcased works feature references to art history, despite the diversity of artistic approaches.
