The Leitz Phone 1 Has Arrived!

Leica Camera AG introduces its first in-house smartphone: the Leitz Phone 1 has been released on the Japanese market.
The Leitz Phone 1 is available in Japan as of July 16, 2021. Leica’s first-ever smartphone is distinguished by an exceptionally large, 1-inch image sensor with a resolution of 20.2 MP – facilitating outstanding photographs; the main camera offers a focal length of 19 mm (35mm equivalent) and an aperture of f/1.9.
Furthermore, the Android device is equipped with a 6.6-inch WUXGA+ display and a 5000 mAh internal battery, and is protected against dust and moisture in accordance with IPX5 / IP68. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888.5G processor with octa-core CPU configuration has a clock rate of 2.8 + 1.8GHz.

Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, majority shareholder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Leica Camera AG, states: “Leica has a long-standing tradition that is and always has been characterised by the constant pursuit of technical innovation. We welcome smartphones because they represent a valuable contribution to the world of photography. Never before have people taken as many pictures as they do today: billions of pictures are posted online every day.”

Kaufmann maintains that the introduction of the Leitz Phone 1 is the logical next step on Leica’s path to the technologies and markets of the future. The smartphone is produced in collaboration with Sharp Corporation, and is available exclusively in Japan via SoftBank, the country’s leading distributor of information and communications technology.
