Leica Women Foto Project Award

March 8, 2023

Four women – four very different visual stories: On March 8 – International Women’s Day – Leica Camera USA announces the winners of the 2023 Leica Women Foto Project Award.
This year’s awardees are Anna Filipova (UK), Eli Farinango (Canada), Greta Rico (Mexico), and Mary F. Calvert (USA). In her project Arctic: The Darkest Hour, Anna Filipova shines a light on the extreme realities of research scientists stationed in Ny-Ålesund on the island of Spitsbergen. Greta Rico’s harrowing and illuminating series Substitute Mothers addresses the topic of femicide in Mexico, with a focus on the orphaned children and the sisters, grandmothers and aunts who step into the breach. With her series Left Behind, Mary F. Calvert draws attention to the alarming number of suicides amongst victims of sexual violence in the Military, while Eli Farinango traces her own experience of reconnecting with her ancestral roots in her winning series, Wilkay.

The Leica Women Foto Project Award is designed to empower the female perspective and its impact in contemporary photography. This year marks the first time the award is given to four women from four countries. Each winner stands to receive 10,000 USD for the completion of an ongoing project, along with a Leica SL2-S and Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 f/2.8 Asph.
