Australia’s first Leica Gallery has just opened its doors in Melbourne – with a grand launch celebration and exciting debut exhibition, dedicated to the legendary Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden.
In 2011, Gilden spent a week travelling through Australia in the company of the Italian-Australian businessman and former boxer Mick Gatto, as well as his entourage of friends. The resulting images – captured in the Leica photographer’s characteristically direct style – are as captivating as they are disconcerting. However, despite the rather dubious reputation that surrounds Gatto’s business dealings, Gilden described the experience as entirely positive: “I had a great time with him. He was courteous and smart – a real gentleman.” The exhibition Untitled at the new Leica Gallery Melbourne presents previously unpublished images from Gilden’s Australia series. The selection of stark, black-and-white images is brimming with unforgettable Gilden moments: captured up close and personal, Gilden’s photographs seem to reveal his protagonist’s soul to the observer.
Leica Gallery Melbourne encompasses an exhibition space of 223 square-metres. On seven days a week, the venue will offer a continuously changing programme of showcases by Australian and international photographers.
The exhibition Untitled continues until 31 January 2019.
