The Fall of the Berlin Wall

Share:

From September 29 to December 15, 2019, the KuK art and cultural centre in Monschau dedicates a showase of around 130 photographs to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition was curated by Nina Mika-Helfmeier in collaboration with long-time FAZ photographer Barbara Klemm, the Ostkreuz photo agency, the Willy-Brandt-Haus cultural centre, and the Argus Fotokunst gallery.

Among the represented photographers are Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler, whose landscape views of the concrete barrier are juxtaposed with later works, showing the same locations after the reunification. Images by Arno Fischer portray everyday life in East Berlin, while works by Harald Hauswald focus on the era’s subcultures. Barbara Köppe gives insight into the lives of women in the GDR. The showcase also features works by press photographer Barbara Klemm – renowned as the ‘chronicler of the reunification’ – whose coverage of the fall of the iron curtain yielded some of the era’s most iconic images.
