Salzburg’s Fotohof presents images by Wolfgang Vollmer, along with historical artworks by Henry Rox – continuing until April 3, 2021.

For Wolfgang Vollmer (b. 1952), photography is less about recording a specific scene, and more about collecting and researching, deconstruction and re-evaluation. The German artist examines the medium’s inherent conditions, and poses questions about perception and subjectivity.

Under the title of ‘Masterpieces of Photographic Art – The Vollmer Collection’, Fotohof presents images that veer between ironic quotations and affectionate homages to familiar photographic themes.

In parallel, the gallery presents the showcase ‘Henry Rox − Photographs 1935−1955’. The German-American artist, sculptor and photographer Henry Rox (1899-1967) was known for creative inventions such as his whimsical fruit sculptures, which bring to mind the surreal experiments of Man Ray. In these masterpieces, elements of acrobatics, music and dance are blended with the absurdities of ordinary life – culminating in visual parodies whose ‘protagonists’ are made of vegetables and fruits.
