Gisèle Freund (1908–2000) ranks among the most famous photographers of the twentieth century, acclaimed in particular for her portraits of artists such as James Joyce, Simone de Beauvoir, Virginia Woolf and Frida Kahlo.

The Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow now presents a comprehensive retrospective of her work, including more than fifty selected portraits whose original vibrant colours have been re-created using state-of-the-art digital processing.

Divided into 14 sections, the exhibition comprises a total of 280 colour and black-and-white photographs spanning from 1935 to 1965, along with contact sheets, vintage and exhibition prints. The selection is predominantly centred around artists from the literary world, reflecting both fleeting and close encounters throughout the photographer's life.

The exhibition was previously displayed at the Berlin Academy of Arts and the Kunsthaus in Nuremberg. It now continues at the Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow until 24 January 2016.
