The exhibition ‘In Situ: Photo Stories on Migration’ is on show at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne from June 19 to October 3, 2021.
In the years from 1955 to 1989, many photographers documented the visible transformation of Cologne and other Rhineland cities. The resulting images have become part of our collective visual memory. However, few of these works represent the perspectives of the migrant workers involved in this urban evolution. To redress the balance, the exhibition ‘In Situ: Photo Stories on Migration’ juxtaposes professional photographs of housing developments with private images from the holdings of the DOMiD (Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration in Germany).

These private snapshots illustrate how streets, buildings, shops, pubs and parks can serve as a platform for personal memories and play an integral role in the city’s history. The exhibition was conceptualised by Ela Kaçel and Barbara Engelbach, and organised in collaboration with the DOMiD.

Among the exhibits are works by Chargesheimer, Candida Höfer and Ulrich Tillmann, taken from the museum’s own holdings. Curatorial consultation was provided by Manuel Gogos and Aurora Rodonò. ‘In Situ: Photo Stories on Migration’ is on show at the Museum Ludwig from June 19 to October 3, 2021.
