Life in the Big Apple

The Bene Taschen Gallery in Cologne presents a major retrospective of works by Arlene Gottfried, open from 30 June to 30 July 2019.
The Bene Taschen Gallery in Cologne presents a comprehensive exhibition of works by American photographer Arlene Gottfried (1950–2017 in New York City) – marking the late artist’s first major retrospective in Europe. The selection, which will be on display from 30 June to 30 July 2019, spans the entirety of Gottfried’s oeuvre from the 1970s to the 2000s.

People in all their facets were at the centre of Gottfried’s visual approach. In some cases, the photographer accompanied her subjects over the course of years or even decades. Her book ‘Midnight’, for example, tells the story of Ismael Burgos in images captured over a period of 20 years. In 1970 the artist, who had always lived side by side with New York’s Puerto Rican community, embarked on a project about the inhabitants of the city’s El Burro neighbourhood - eventually culminating in the photo book ‘Bacalaitos & Fireworks’, released in 2011.
