Typologies of Framework Houses

November 3, 2016

From 4 November 2016 to 19 March 2017, the SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne presents the exhibition ‘Bernd & Hilla Becher – Framework Houses of the Siegen Industrial Region’.
The SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne presents an excerpt of its collection in the exhibition ‘Bernd & Hilla Becher – Framework Houses of the Siegen Industrial Region’, showing from 4 November 2016 to 19 March 2017. Spanning the period from 1958 to 1974, the series represents the beginnings of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s (1931–2007, 1934–2015) creative oeuvre. Even then, the artist couple applied the consistent format of presenting an object type in the form of typologies: analysis and synthesis should be possible not only within a precise single image, but also in a near-scientific assembly of photographs.

The Framework House typologies have previously been presented in Cologne, Siegen and as part of Documenta 11 in 2002. In 2004, the Kunststiftung NRW sponsored the acquisition of 15 typologies by Bernd und Hilla Becher, documenting framework houses in the Siegen industrial region. In doing so, the foundation secured the series for the shared archives of the Siegen Museum for Contemporary Art and the Photography Collection of the SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne, where it also complements further significant collections of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work.
